It started with a whisper. A faint rustle from the shadows of the living room. Padmé froze mid-pounce, her pupils wide, her ears flicking like antennas. Jack slinked in silently behind her, eyes trained on the suspicious box by the fireplace—the one Melanie only pulled out in late September.
The Halloween Toy Box.
They knew.
It was time.
With one dramatic swat, Vader flipped the lid open. A puff of catnip-laced air escaped, tinged with something darker—mystery, mischief... and mummies. Out tumbled the first: Crazy Catty Batty, wings flared, eyes wild. The unmistakable jingle of his refillable tummy echoed through the room. Moments later, his moody sibling, Spooky Catty Batty, emerged, wings crossed (or maybe just awkwardly stitched that way), looking unimpressed.
“He always makes an entrance,” muttered Aluna, who had been hiding inside a shoebox.
But then, something new stirred.
From beneath the folds of fleece and fur rose a sleek silhouette—Flirty Catty Batty. With her lavender fuzz and a wink in her stitch, she stretched her wings and fluttered right onto the windowsill, purring like she owned the place. The crew gathered, tails twitching.
“What kind of bat is that?” Jack asked, circling.
“The kind that gets whatever she wants,” Flirty replied, rolling toward the nearest crinkle ball with all the grace of a velvet hurricane.
Suddenly, a thump. From the depths of the toy box, something heavy rolled out—a jar. Of. Eyeballs.
“Sweet Bastet,” whispered Padmé.
The eyeballs bounced across the floor, each one stitched with care and packed with organic catnip. Green, orange, purple, and white, all blinking (okay, not really) as they scattered like enchanted candy. But the chaos wasn’t over yet.
Wrapped head to toe in organic twill and rope limbs came staggering Mummy Cat, his refillable belly rattling with every step. Jack leapt backward. Aluna squeaked.
“I thought he was just a legend,” whispered Vader.
“He’s real,” Spooky Batty nodded solemnly. “And he wants the good nip.”
Finally, from behind the toy box, waddled in the Jack O'Lanterns: Happy Jack and Spooky Jack, bright-eyed and bold. Old friends, always the life of the party, always slightly... unhinged. They all stared at the toy box, now empty.
Melanie walked in, carrying a fresh scoop of Purrblend catnip. "You ready for release day?" she grinned.
They were.
